Donaire opts not to fight other Pinoy champs

Nonito Donaire
MANILA, Philippines – World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super flyweight champion Nonito Donaire is not one who backs away from a fight.

But if offered to fight another Filipino champion, the Filipino-American fighter -- one of the best in the world – said he’d rather not.

“Kahit sino basta wag lang Filipino fighters,” said Donaire. “It doesn’t make sense na lalaban ako sa isang world champion na Pilipino.”

(I’ll fight anyone but not Filipinos. It doesn’t make sense for me to fight another Filipino champion).

Donaire, the guest in this week’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) forum in Manila, said he wants to help his fellow Filipino boxers, and challenging them to a title fight won’t do them any good.

“Kakaunti lang ang world champions natin ngayon… Why would we want to take away the title of other Filipinos instead of getting the title from other nationalities gaya ng Puerto Ricans, Mexicano, Panama?” said the world’s Top 4 pound-for-pound boxer.

(We have few world champions. Why would we want to take away the title of other Filipinos instead of getting the title from other nationalities like Puerto Ricans, Mexicans or Panamanians?)

“I’ll do my best to support the Filipino boxers,” he added.

Still chasing Montiel
Donaire is currently after a fight versus Mexican bantamweight king Fernando Montiel, preferably in the undercard of a Manny Pacquiao fight on November 13.

He said Montiel, who owns the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organziation (WBO) bantamweight crowns, remains silent about wanting to fight him.

“I’m eyeing Fernando Montiel if they want to take the negotiation. But for now, we don’t hear from Montiel’s mouth na ‘lalaban ako kay Donaire’ (I wanna fight Donaire),” said the Fil-Am.

Should Montiel accept his challenge, he expects an exciting bout against the Mexican.

“He has power and experience over me,” said Donaire. “I think I have power as well, pero sa experience, he has been there for a long time. He’s been champion for many years.”
